Praise for the week

All for that moment

December 17th 2007

If you’re lucky enough, you live under a rock and Christmas shopping just passes you by. For many of us, it’s necessary. A few of us do it in June, but the majority leave it until about now. I could rant and rave, like oh so many other people, but that’s not what this blog is about.

This is about that moment when walk out of a shop, having just made a brilliant purchase that you know the lucky recipient will love. The high street is busy, but not bustling. People are chatting, couples wonder in large coats with scarfs warn tightly. Lights dazzle and illuminate the street. Window displays are bright and merry. It’s nearly Christmas. Your girlfriend rings telling you she’s got dinner (that hasn’t happened yet...) and can’t wait to see you home.

You’re warm, wrapped up. On your arms are some fine presents and maybe a hot chocolate in one arm. You know you look good. Everybody else on the street looks good and walks with a sense of purpose. People aren’t getting in your way as you approach the last shop. You enter, with a nod from the doorman. An assistant greets you with a smile. You ask where you can find things for you – time for some personal shopping.
A pair of jeans screams out at you. They’re on sale, great colour too. You take them to the fitting room and sure enough, they fit perfectly. Swipe the plastic, bag it up and you’re on your way home for dinner.

This is quite hard to achieve, normally requires living in a pleasant city and pure, pure luck. But it does happen. Keep trying, it’s worth it.
